First suggestion is to get out a map so you can see that Vancouver is not on Vancouver Island. The city has a spectacular setting around a major harbour so you can do plenty of walking along the English Bay beaches and through Stanley Park. The anthropology museum at the University of British Columbia is fascinating if you are interested in First Nations culture. Here's what Wikipedia says: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Museum_...opology_at_UBC
Granville Island, just off downtown, shelters artistan workshops and a tantalizing farm and seafood market, with a nice brewpub. http://granvilleisland.com/

I lived in Vancouver for 4 months and one of my favorite things is to climb the Grouse Grind....up Grouse mountain, just underneath the tram up the mountain. Hard as hell but a lot of fun. Also, walk the complete circle around Stanley Park.
