Is late Sept/early Oct too late for the Rockies?
Any help appreciated...

Any need for a 4-wheel drive by that time, or do rental companies always provide chains, once you're into Sept.?

Past experiences at that time of year?

Thanks!

Its the best time to go. Fall colours are out, crowds are gone. Weather is usually lovely until mid October at least (does get cold at night). It would be extremely unlikey to get snow then, but freak storms have occurred. You dont really need a four wheel drive or chains even in mid winter unless you are going through high mountain passes or off-road. The main highways are modern, very well maintained. When it snows they are plowed and sanded very promptly.

Thanks for your replies!

Now, we won't be able to leave until Sept. 25...still seems sort of late to just be beginning a trip, but we have no choice due to other conflicts.

Have recently begun debating about whether a trip to the west coast of Vancouver Island & Telegraph Cove (for grizzly & orca viewing) makes more sense this time of year? (late Sept/1st week of October) Would that be better than the Rockies, this late in the season?

We went to the Canadian Rockies on our honeymoon Sept 25-Oct 1. The weather was beautiful - only two days of clouds; otherwise, fairly warm and sunny. We were on a separate trip in the early part of October and were in a couple of inches of snow on the Icefields Parkway in a Grand Marquis, but had no problems getting to where we were going. I would go without any hesitation - it is beautiful!!
