How much time is Calgary worth?

We are visiting Banff, Jasper and Yoho in June. Have accommodations. Will fly in/out of Calgary. Before I book the flights, is Calgary worth a full day (and 2 nights?). Or ignore the town? Based on a quick scan the Forum has little to say about it and the usual places (TA) don't indicate much that is appealing to us (seniors, museums, great views.) Advice appreciated.

It really depends on your trip...

Calgary is a pleasant city, but it's not particularly unique in terms of similarly sized western cities. Usually people end up staying in Calgary if they have a really early/late flight, going to a specific event like the Stampede or hockey game, or have an interest in the local history. Otherwise, we generally suggest that people focus what is often fairly limited time in the mountains and other more unique areas of the province(s).

How long do you have for Jasper, Banff and Yoho? If you don't have a least a week, I would certainly not be spending time in Calgary. Even if you have more time, extra days might better used by going to places like Drumheller, Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump, Waterton NP etc.

That said, it's not like Calgary is devoid of things to do. There are a couple of excellent museums, beautiful parks, and a variety of brew pubs, restaurants and a lively night scene.

Having done it many times... I'd add time to banff, jasper , and add in Lake Louise for a night , and visit Moraine and Emerald lakes , and yes Drumheller is worth a visit.. but its 1.5 hours drive away.. ( and not on the way to anywhere else )

Calgary is ok. It has a nice zoo, a military museum ( obviously a few more ) . Some good restaurants.. but if going for scenery.. nope..the best views are off the far off mountains.. so go spend more time there..

Depending on when you are flying in ... ( morning or night ) Calgary may be worth a night before a long international flight , or a night before if flying out early.

Thanks!

Thanks to you both for rapid response and useful info. We have four nites in each of 3 parks. We'll skip Calgary and add a couple sites you suggested.
