Hotel near GM Place
Hello all! Heading to Vancouver, BC this weekend for a Canucks v. Red Wings game at GM Place. Would love to hear about recommendations for hotels within walking distance. We're a party of four and will probably get a suite. Your favorite place to eat in the vicinity? Or fun bar? Thanks as always, Fodorites!
PS: Trip to England was wonderful thanks to all of your feedback. If I had to be anywhere outside the US on Sept. 11th--that was the place to be. Tremendous support and good will. A blessing.

You'll have tons of choices
GM Place is located in the east part of downtown Vancouver. Realistically, anywhere downtown Vancouver is within walking distance to GM Place, it just varies on your opinion of walking distance. You can, say, stay at one of the city's top hotels in a very central downtown location, like the Sutton Place, and you'll be able to walk down to GM Place in less than 20 minutes. Or you can walk to the skytrain station, and take the skytrain directly to GM Place (the skytrain costs approximately $1.75 and is only a short 1-2 minute ride away).
If you want to literally stay next to GM Place, there's the Westin Grand or the Sandman Inn. But the point is, there's a lot of choice within a 20 minute walk of GM Place - you don't necessarly have to be nextdoor.
As for favourite restaurant, once again, because most of downtown Vancouver is within walking distance (as it's physically tiny and compact), you'll have an endless choice of restaurants.
It'll just depend on what kind of restaurant you're looking for (for casual brew-pub, one of my favourite places a short walk away from GM Place is the Yaletown Brewing Co... there's also Dix BBQ & Brewery)
Here's a link of some restaurants in Vancouver. Vancouver Magazine has published mini reviews on each, so you'll get an idea of what's available:

I'm sure others will give you many more suggestions too!

The bar at the Sandman Hotel called Shark Club is where alot of people hang out for a drink or two before going off to the game as GM Place is practically across the street. If you go after the game they start charging a cover charge at 10:00 i believe and gets a big lineup after the game.
p.s see you at the game!
