Driving from New York to PEI
We are thinking of flying from the UK to New York in August (regrettably tied by school/uni term dates) giving my girls 2 or 3 hectic days in New York (with plenty of shopping opportunities) then driving to PEI where we will spend a quiet 4 or 5 days. Probably would have to fly back to Blighty out of New York again - and would have about 2 - 2 1/2 weeks in all available.
Is this feasible? Roughly how long would the driving take - we are happy to amble and take our time, stayover and/or see a few things enroute if possible. I know this is quite a general question but any opinions will be appreciated.
Also posting this on the Canada forum.
Thanks all!!

The most direct route from NYC to PEI -- as you can see on mapquest.com -- is 825 miles and takes 14 hours. It is all motorway until you get to the Canadian border and the Canadian portion, in turn, is quite a large, fast road.
However, the route mostly takes you inland, away from the coast -- hence away from the most picturesque and historic parts of the New England states.
I doubt you would have time, given your tight schedule, to make detours to such attractive spots as Bar Harbor, Maine.
Overall it is a lot of driving....

well, your time frame is pretty tight.
if you go, i'd recommend leaving very early in the morning from new york and drive to bar harbor, maine. spend two nights there - it's a beautiful spot. then drive bar harbor to pei. then just take the fastest route back to new york to catch your fight. or if time allows...you will be driving over the confederation bridge to get to pei. on the return trip, you could take the ferry from pei into the pictou/new glasscoe area of nova scotia. then drive to digby, nova scotia. catch the ferry from there to saint john, new brunswick and then drive. there is also a ferry that goes from yarmouth, nova scotia down to portland or bar harbor, maine but this one is a little pricey. (a note on the side...in my opinion, saint john, new brunswick is not worth a stop). have fun.
