We have a day planned in Kootenay NP on our upcoming trip as we travel from Radium to Lake Louise. I am aware that Marble Canyon in closed. We had intended hiking the Stanley Glacier Trail but have seen a bear warning for this area on the park's website so are feeling a bit wary about this.

I would be interested in hearing anyones comments on suggestions for good day hike alternatives - we would be happy to do 2 shorter hikes if necessary

Sorry, but I've never day-hiked in Kootenay, only done the Rockwall (5 day backcountry hike).

However, there is a list of hikes on the Kootenay website. You might start there and do some research on the particular hikes and see if any of them are what you're after.

We love the Stanley Glacier Hike (make sure you continue past official trail end and up to the top). Has a bit of everything, glacier, waterfalls, caves, marmots/pikas, beautiful oasis up top. I would continue checking about the bear warning, but have a back up hike in mind. Sorry, but only hike we've done in Kootenay.

Turns out the bear advisory had been lifted by the time we got there. I can highly recommend this hike up to great views overlooking the glacier at the head of the valley.

There was a posting earlier that said the Marble Trail was open again. If so, it is good for perhaps an hour to 2 hours.

I endorse the Stanley Glacier hike, subject to the bears of course. It is one that is not too taxing. I recall doing it shortly after I had a new hip put in.

If you can consult a copy of The Canadian Rockies Trail Guide by Brian Patton and Bart Robinson, you should get more ideas about Kootenay and the various hiking opportunities.
