Border Patrol

I'm going to be driving into Canada from Vermont in a few weeks. How different is crossing the border since September 11th. Will I need anything besides my driver's license?

You definately need proof of citizenship - Passport best but birth certificate or voter registration card is usually accepted. A driver's license only proves you are licensed to drive in a certain jurisdiction - not that you're a citizen so it is not acceptable without one of the ones noted above.

Think photo ID (i.e. passport or other) for that border crossing, I don't know if its mandatory via auto but it is for airports and will certianly be your best bet for any hassle avoidance.

Hi Pamela, we crossed at the NY/Champlain border,October 12th and we took passports and photo id's and they didn't ask to see either one! But be prepared...and they did look in our trunk on the way back into the US, the wait was less than 10 minutes. They will ask you where you live, where you are going and why, and where you are staying. They are very serious and very polite.

Pamela-Previous posters have already answered your question about the border crossing, but thought you might find this sight useful-www.ccra.gc.ca. Once there, click on the box (upper right hand corner) for border crossing info. We found this helpful in determining delays at specific crossing points between the two countries. We crossed the Peace Bridge into Canada about 3 weeks ago-absolutely no delays in crossing into Canada. Thought we might have a problem because we only had temporary license tags on our car-we were asked twice, however, who owned the car(we had proof with us plus our passports). We experienced about a 1/2 hr wait returning to the States(again via Peace Bridge), but we traveled on a Sunday, so weekend traffic may have had something to do with it. We've experienced longer crossing waits 'pre' Sept 11. Have fun !

My husband and I have gone into Canada from Vt. many times, most recently in mid-October for a long weekend. I always have my driver's license w/ me, and take my birth certificate and my children's (we don't have passports); my husband never takes anything other than his license, even though he does have a passport. We've never been asked to show them - even after 9/11. But I guess it's better to be safe than sorry. They always ask where we're headed, why and for how long (usually it's to Montreal for the weekend), and that's it. By the way, there are several crossings near the VT/NY/CAN border -- some are really tiny!
