Best Short-Term Canada/US cellphone option?

My daughter will be in Montreal July 5 - Aug 30. Our US carrier wanted to change our entire family plan...no thanks. What is the best option for her, while in Canada, for texting mostly to US, and periodic calling to US and within Quebec area? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Buy her an international phone card and make her go to a landline... everything else is huge bucks... even roaming on your current phone will be an extra 70 cents/minute or text... kids text burps nowadays... that could bankrupt you...

What cell phone carrier are you with? We're with AT&T, and I just checked this yesterday becuase my DD will be in Canada for 15 days. She can use her regular AT&T phone -- it costs $.79 a minute from Canada to the US for phone calls (or $.59 if you sign up for a "plan" for $4.99 a month), and $.50 per text (but you can sign up for an international texting plan that ends up costing about $.20 per text --- $10.00 for 50 texts in a month, etc.).

hey man all you have to do is unlock your phone (if you have tmobile they will unlock it for you) otherwise just find one on ebay or google and they will unlock it for you

I prefer rogers because they have the best service. Just walk in the store get a prepaid plan, pop in the sim card and thats it. Hope that helps

Thanks so much for this input. Our carrier, Verizon, didn't have a cost-effective plan and wanted our entire family plan to change...just for 2 months. I'll pass this info along to my daughter!
