Airport security

I am supposed to fly out of Vancouver to Frankfurt on 9/26. I want to go, but I am very concerned. How is security at Canadian airports compared to US. Do you think there will be a lot of new security implemented? I have absolutely no problem with going through whatever measures needs to be done. I just hate to give up my freedom to travel because of some faceless evil. Any advice?

I think security in Canadian airports is better. Some measures that are being taken in the states are things that have always been in Canadian airports. I don't think any airport has every had curbside check in. But the most obvious one to me is if you are not travelling your movement is controlled alot more.

I would watch tv shows and see people at the gate and thing this is so fake as if you could be there if you didn't have a boarding pass. Wrong! You can in the states.

I agree with Lidja Security at Canadian Airports is excellent.
I've travelled in the US and was not impressed at the token security provided, resentful minimum wage slaves snarling their way thru the day.
I had never seen/heard of such a thing as curbside check-in before I went Stateside, I had trouble envisioning what it was!

Security at YVR right now is extreme to the point of being ridiculous. Baggage checks are so rigid as to require people to arrive at least three to four hours before flight time. Something will have to give over the next few weeks like either much more security staff to handle the perceived need or lowering the state of emergency. I tend to favour the former for now although it's going to cost us all more in ticket prices because the airlines are paying for all the extra security.

The thing that is so un-Canadian is the military or police personell strolling around with machine guns strapped to their backs. I mean this is Canada - Vancouver - for gods sake! I guess it's better to over react than under react in this case but jeez, it's really depressing to see this in our country.

I'm not sure if it's part of the present problem, but for years I've been encouraging people in the U.S. to obtain and carry a passport. It simplifies the border crossing process for everyone involved.

We are American citizens but often use the airports in Canada and there are some airport where security is questionable and if i had to vote for the most unfriendly airport in the world then Toronto wins hands down. And security there is the worst. At least when we travelled in November 2000, March 2001, August 1999, Sptember 1999 and October 1999. Wherever you go try to avoid Toronto. After what happened in New York I know that we will never use Toronto airport again
