18 days in Toronto - what to do?

We will be visiting Toronto in July and August for 18 days and will be staying at the Novotel Central. We are coming from England to visit our daughter who has just moved to Toronto to work. We are looking for day trips outside of Toronto but do not want to hire a car. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

A couple of suggestions:

1) Check out viarail.ca (essentially the national rail carrier). You are only a couple of blocks from Union Station (Toronto's train station) at the Novotel. You might consider day trips to Niagara-on-the-Lake (great little town with little shops, restaurants, B&Bs etc.), Stratford (great theatre in the summer), even Niagara Falls (the falls itself, and the casino, though this place is a real tourist trap).

Also, from the Novotel you are just a 10 minute walk to the ferries for the Toronto islands which can be quite pleasant. My advice here is go on a weekday when the crowds are lighter.

If I come up with anything else I'll let you know.

Rob

I would also recommend Niagara-on-the-Lake.

You may also want to consider a trip to the St. Jacobs area. This the Mennonite area within driving distance of Toronto.

As for transportation to both, since you don't want to drive, I would think there would be bus trips. Your hotel or one of the downtown Toronto travel agencies could like assist you with this.

Two websites which may assist:

www.toronto.com is fairly comprehensive for what's happening in Toronto and also covers the outlying area

hmmmm...the other website I was going to give you just redirected me to another...well, here's the new one...I hope it's useful but I can't vouch for it http://www.canadatravel.ca/ontario/index.html

Hi, Peter! 18 days in Toronto during
July & August when it can be sweltering
seems like a lot to me! Now, you are comimg to Tor. to visit your daughter but do you want to see her every day? Maybe you cld. consider staying in Niagara-on-the Lake for a few nights, Stratford a couple of nights, etc. Getting in & out of To. w/out
a car on a daily basis will be tiring & annoying in the traffic & heat & humidity! Perhaps your daughter cld. join you for weekend visits outside of To? The area north of To. is 'cottage
country' & there are many fineplaces to stay
& exciting things to see & do.But you wld. have to rent a car so you may not like this idea. ( PS when you say Novotel Central do you mean the Novotel
on the Esplanade in downtown To?)
