See Sydney Smart Travel Card

After spending hours trawling Fodors to plan our trip, I find I now have most of the answers to all those questions, but there are still some that I'm sure all you Fodorites could answer. We will be in Aussie for two months -August and September- house exchanging. We start off in Cairns, then down to Noosa, then have the last two weeks in Sydney. We are an over 60 year old couple, reasonably fit and adventurous, like easy walking, museums, art galleries etc., and need to keep costs down. My first question is for Sydney;I'd like to know if the "See Sydney and beyond" smart travel card with transport is good value, or do you have to dash around to really get your money's worth?

Hi Kittycucumber, Just checked the website, the pass appears to be $284 per week with transport. A weekly travel pass in Sydney (bus, train, ferry) is between $33 and $55 (depending on distance you need/want to travel).

So don't buy it for the transport angle, also bear in mind the two main art galleries have free entry anyway (AGNSW and MCA), ditto the experimental art spaces (Artspace, Performance Space). The entry fees to museums are also fairly low, $6 for S H Ervin, $10 for Museum of Sydney, Powerhouse Museum, Australian Museum.

Have you checked to see if you would be eligible for senior's (over 60) travel on public transport? I don't know the rules regarding interstate or overseas people but as seniors, in Melbourne we can travel all day on public transport for $3.
Some one else on this forum may know the answer.

As an Aussie living in Florida, I would like the answer to the senior travel discount. When visiting Australia, in past years we have been asked to show our old age pensioner cards. Not being residents we do not have those.

Here's the Australian government link for the seniors' discount card. It looks like the conditions for getting one vary from state to state, I followed the link for NSW and to qualify you need to be a permanent resident. You could email them to see if there are any other options.
