This may be useful to visitors planning a visit after January.

Until recently, the city circle tram was free and still is. But starting in January, 2015, all CBD (downtown) and Docklands trams will now be free to board with no ticket or card (Myki) necessary.

Thanks for the reminder. It will be handy when I go into the city for conferences.

It is a pity they couldn't extend it out a couple of stops to take in the Art Gallery and the Shrine. But at least they are not too far to walk.

I agree - it would be even better if it went up Nicholson as far as the Melbourne Museum and Exhibition Building... and as far down St. Kilda Ave as you say, to the NGV and Shrine. Those are often on the short list for visitors and that would make the whole scheme seem even more tourist friendly. Especially for those who aren't as mobile and may not be as familiar with mass transit passes and such (and may not even need them if the couple extra lengths were included).

But as you say, those are pretty easy walks otherwise. I'm encouraged that they've taken this initiative all the same.

For anyone reading this in 2015, check the rules as the current State government has promised this but if the opposition gets into power they may stay with paying for trams in the central city area. Check first, there would be a hefty fine if you assume it's free and it's not. We should know after the election in November 2014.

I don't think the ticket inspectors would waive a fine after hearing "I read it on Fodors"

I doubt you get out of a fine but it's a bit more credible as an "I saw it on..." reference, being the actual government site.
