Dress Code For Sydney Opera?

Hi-<BR><BR>I was wondering if there was any type of formal dress code when attending a performance at the Sydney Opera? How about at any of the more upscale restaurants in town? <BR><BR>Thanks,<BR><BR>Mike

I would think that the dress code at the Opera in Sydney is more or less the same as anywhere else in the world. Having said that I was taken aback when in Buenos Aires at the Opera recently I saw so many people in jeans - that would not be appropriate in Sydney. Just apply universial standards in any or the restaurants as well.

Went in April to a modern dance performance of my wife's choosing. I wore nice pants and a short sleeve silk shirt- wifey wore nice pants, blouse and sweater. The guy to my immediate right wore swimtrunks and flip flops with an untucked T-Shirt and the people down in the lower levels wore tuxedos and evening dresses. I was in decent seats also. Everyone seemed to wear whatever they wanted to. The upscale restaurants were a little more standardized but most people were dressy casual or business attire. Sydney is like Southern California in terms of dress code - which is mostly whatever you want with few exceptions.

But please, Mike, don't wear your swim trunks and flip-flops and untucked T-shirt to the opera! Rs's "nice pants and short-sleeve shirt" is much more the way to go. The people he saw in tuxedos were probably the orchestra.<BR>

"Smart casual" is the way to go in Sydney. That's what they call it. We were just in Sydney and saw Volpone in the Playhouse of the Opera House on Monday night. It was really casual - even people in jeans. I think maybe if you are in the concert hall or actual opera theatre it might be *slightly* more dressy, but not by much.<BR><BR>Same for restaurants. Go comfortable, and leave your tux at home!<BR><BR>BTW, we had dinner in Beppi's, an Italian restaurant in East Sydney. Highly recommend it! If you go, have your concierge reserve you a table in the wine cellar portion - it's wonderful, and very romantic. Food is great, too. We went there after the play - was just a short taxi ride from the opera house. Have fun!
