That all depends. As an educator, I have the most time in June, July, August so that's when we went. The advantage of that time is that the costs were down since it is winter there. We were even able to use FF miles for the whole trip and get pretty much the flights we wanted. One the down side, especially in the South Island it was chilly and the days were very short. So we ended up having to bypass side trips that we might have done because we had to get to the next town before dark.

The weather varies a lot in Australia from north to south. Can you indicate where you were thinking of going and what activities you wanted to do (for example, snorkelling, skiing, bush walking etc)?

spurs , where are you wanting to travel in Australia?

The continent is just so,so vast and with such widely varied weather conditions that this will really affect your timing.

Tropical Far North Queensland and Southern Tamania, for example, have such different climate conditions as to seem like two different countries.

Can you give some more guidelines, this would help us help you.

Weather wise the best time to visit New Zealand is in February, once schools have gone back, which is usually the first week of February.

I'd nominate autumn (Feb-May say) as best for Sydney too - but the couple of months after that, while not exactly swimming weather, would normally be pleasant enough. Summer, especially Jan-Feb, can be unpleasantly sticky.

We went to New Zealand in April and experienced lovely fall weather. Most days were sunny, but not hot. We had a few cloudy days with a bit of drizzle, but no real rain until our last day.
