Hi--
Sydney is an awesome city--just so beautiful, lots to do, great restaurants. It's great; definately go there. Melbourne is nice but I didn't like it near as much. The area in/around Port Douglas in N. Queensland has so much to offer so you should consider it as well. I would say QLD would be a must do!

Adelaide and Kangaroo Island are more off the beaten path but are special. Kangaroo Island is a great place to go if you like seeing animals in their own habitat...

Have fun planning your trip. You're going to have a wonderful time in Australia!
Debbie

If you love city life and the beach then it's Sydney 1,2,and 3. Sydney has some wonderful beaches around it and its a terrific city to stay in. Do a search on Sydney on this site and get some really good ideas.

If you love the beaches & city pleasures than absolutely Sydney and Surfers Paradise. I would also include a village named Port Douglas (PD) because you don't want to go to Australia without seeing the rainforest & the Great Barrier Reef & what better place to do the foregoing than PD. The places mentioned would encompass a 3 week vacation in good fashion althrough I could easily spend double the time in those places without any boredom. If you have more time you can consider other places such as Hobart, Adelaide, etc. Australia is much like the U.S.A. -it is big with many different attractions but yet different types of attractions than the U.S.A.

Bill has hit the nail on the head here. Sydney, Surfer's Paradise and Port Douglas - those three and you have a good cross section of Australia and everything that you could want.
