What to do alone in Melbourne

I'm visiting friends in Melbourne for several months. My friends work during the day and I would like some tips on the best things to do alone.

Thanks for your help,

Hi Jen,
A lot depends on what you like to do, but here goes:
visit St Kilda (10 mins from city), have a coffee and people watch, walk along the beach, have a swim, shop.

Visit Queen Victoria Market in the city. They sell just about everything.

Go to the top of the Rialto Tower in the city - fabulous views, night and day.

Do a tour, or hire a car, and drive down the Great Ocean Road - 3 days minimum otherwise you're rushing. Lorne is great.

Go to the movies - Tuesday is usually cheap night.

Get a train to Prahran and visit Borders, huge book shop with cafe and often live music. Chapel St, Prahran is great for people watching and funky fashions.

If you like shopping, you would love Chadstone shopping centre - has just about everything there. About 30 mins from city.

Southgate and Casino precinct along the Yarra River in the city is good for walking, lunch etc. Market on Sundays.

Melbourne has some great gardens in the city area where you can walk, picnic or feed the ducks.

Rockclimbing, bushwalking, canoeing clubs.

Further afield, the Yarra Valley has great wineries and the Dandenong Ranges has tearooms for scones, craft shops and lovely walks.

Hope this gives you some ideas. Hopefully your friends live near the city or near a train line to make it easier to get about.

Hi Jen,

Kay gave you some pretty good suggestions. I will just add the following:

1-There is a free tram that rides around the city. Take advantage of that one day.

2-The Great Ocean Road trip is fabulous, but take a tour. Its a difficult drive - especially when you are used to driving on the right side of the road and they drive on the left.

3-Visit the Fairy Penguins at Phillip Island. The bus tours usually leave around 1PM and do not return until maybe 11PM. But it is a site to behold.

Hope this helps.

All of the suggestons made so far are great. Visit the Melbourne Tourist office at the Town Hall in the city for lots of ideas and info. There are a number of tour companies that go both along the Great Ocean Rd & to Phillip Island for the penguins.
other suggestions: take a ferry along the Yarra to Williamstown, visit the historic properties of Como & Ripponlea, go to the Zoo - it's reckoned to be one of the best in the world. Visit some gardens. Depending on the time of year - go to any number of beaches.

Was there in May, and we did a tour that took us up into the mountains, that was beautiful, up near Belgrave. We went on Puffing Billy, a 100 year old train, where you sit in the windows and hang your feet out. Then they took us to the Healsburg wildlife Sanctuary. You go right into the pens with animals. Liked it better than the Taronga Zoo in Sydney. Dingos were wandering around, getting petted. I had never seen a warthog, a tasmanian devil, or a platypus before. They have volunteers that show you around. There were 3 of us, and we had 2 volunteers to ourselves. You could probably do those things on your own and not take a tour, since you have lots of time. Now I want to go back and do the Great Ocean Road! Loved Melbourne.
