Fantastic, eigasuka! Our first dilemma will be where to live - we've been asked to fill out a questionarie for the real estate folks (we'll be renting) but can't tell much from neighborhood descriptions and maps. Guess we can worry about that when we get there - early days yet.

Your first major decision will be North or South of the River. That's the big divide around here. And then you decide how close you want to be to the beach.
With petrol prices the way they are, you'll want to be near your workplace. The trains get pretty crowded in peak hour - it's the big news of the moment and I remember a time not so long ago when the Government were copping flak for spending money building a train line.

We're thinking closer to the river than the beach, schools not important as we don't have kids, near a train station, as spouse will be working in CBD and hopes to use public transport. He seems to think Northern River Suburbs might work (Claremont, Cottesloe, Crawley, Dalkeith, Mosman Park, Nedlands, Peppermint Grove, Swanbourne). He wants close proximity to work, I want peace and quiet and space (not homes right smack next to one another).
I understand there are a few bottlenecks around the river crossings that we'd do best to avoid, but can't remember the specifics.

And very well serviced by the best schools too. Even though that's not what you need, you'd be advised to keep away from them to avoid the school traffic. Otherwise, as long as you're not right near Stirling Highway, anywhere would be quiet and peaceful.
Hey, it's Perth. That's our major complaint. Everywhere is quiet, sometimes too much so. Cottesloe or Swanbourne walking distance to the train woud be my choice. Not so pretentious.

We definitely don't want pretentious. We'll take a closer look Cottesloe and Swanbourne -walking distance to the train would be a major perk.
I love peace and quiet, so sounds like Perth is the perfect place for me.

The good news is Perth is wonderful. I returned after living all over the world.
It is great living near the beach but Google up the coast line and look at a few.We are in boom times here with the mining sector and rents are high.There are relocating agents who could do some ground work for you.
Parking becoming a problem in CBD so near a train line is a great idea. Really everything else is close and the traffic Jam!!!!!compared to other cities is really just just a slow drive at peak hours.

I live in Cottesloe. It takes 15 to get to city,2 min to get to beach and 5 to train station. Rents for houses are round$1000 a week. Apartments that are decent $500 Australian

I've never lived a place where rent was charged by the week. Is one actually expected to pay by the week or are monthly payments widely accepted?

Rentals are usually quoted on a weekly basis, but paid fortnightly or monthly in advance.
I think it would be only fairly inexpensive rentals that would be paid weekly.
If you've been looking at the rental market & thinking those rates are monthly, you're in for a very rude shock (LOL doesn't really cut it in this case, but you know what I mean, I'm sure)
Have you had a look at www.domain.com.au and www.realestate.com.au
Might give you an idea of what's available in which price brackets.
I think you're lucky to be in the Perth market, don't think it's as tight as Sydney or Melbourne where it's just about at an all time low in vacancy rates.

Melnq8, rents are quoted by the week everywhere in Australia. Perhaps it's a real estate agents' conspiracy to soften the blow, but it's always been that way.
I love RE agents. 30 years after the introduction of metric weights and measures they're still talking in acres.
BTW, I was glad to see you passed the dreaded visa hurdle. The Immigration Department works in mysterious ways. I know and have heard of several Americans who on the face of it would make excellent citizens being knocked back, while I walk into local shops to be served by young Asian people with minimal English.
(That's most definitely not a racist comment BTW - I'm just wondering how the latter got their points compared to people with university qualifications and very high assimilation prospects. Investment capital? Needed skills? Doesn't look like it. Sorry, thread hijack over.)

It's just the whole concept of weekly rates that baffles me - paying by the week makes me think of short term vacation rentals and/or conjures up images of dodgy motels and flophouses. Glad to hear rent isn't paid by the week - can't imagine making weekly rent payments.

We knew going into this that it was going to be expensive, but we did our homework. Our sticker shock has been considerably softened by some perks from the company, without which, we'd never agreed to the move.

The visa process went much faster than we expected - lots of initial paperwork and a trip to Singapore to get a chest x-ray (guess they thought we might have TB coming from Indonesia), but we were both really impressed.

Melnq8, check out this website to give you some ideas of what's available in your price range and areas of interest. You can search based on number of bedrooms, house type, location(s) and weekly maximum rent.

I had a look at Adelaide, where I live and one can rent a decent house in walking distance (or 5 minutes drive) to the city centre for less than $600/week. We are one of the cheapest cities in Australia for living in. Perth overtook us a long time ago.

You can certainly find places to rent for a lot less than $1000 pw! Most people don't earn near that much.
The suburbs you mentioned are certainly up-market places to live but they are also generally older suburbs with a wide range of accommodations from small flats in large blocks to original and restored cottages through to sky-the-limit mansions. You could probably contact one of the larger agencies and tell them you requirements. Many specialise in that area though can't think of any atm excelpt Greg Rossen and nt sure he does rental.

At long last, the nq8s have arrived in Perth - I think I've died and gone to heaven!
We're currently looking for a place to live, but in our downtime, we're exploring this beautiful city on foot. Absolutely loving the Australian version of winter, complete with fantastic mandarins and fresh strawberries...but we well know we'll be melting come summer.
Spent yesterday exploring Kings Park (again) and this morning we walked along the Swan River, stopping for a flat white at a cafe overlooking the ferry port (jetty, wharf? - I'm a landlocked American, what can I say?)
This is gonna be good.

Ferry to Fremantle; tea at the bookshop, lunch in one of the pubs.
London Arcade.
I think there's an airshow coming up shortly - I watched a couple of tiger moths doing barrel rolls over the river early one morning - and another time there was an air-race with vintage planes and they landed on the park beside the Esplanade.
Watch out for those freezing winds down St.Georges Terrace

Melnq8, New Zealand also quotes rents by the week, my DD and SIL who are now living in Ohio had to get used to the rent being on a monthly basis. They are loving it as they have been able to get a 3 bedroom house in Columbus for
$ 1050 per month ($ 275.00) a week they would have been paying
$ 400.00 a week in Wellington where they lived for a similar house. Suffice to say they were actually living in a converted garage, one bedroom for $ 135.00 a week.
