Have flown United economy Aust to USA several times, because their Mileage Plus scheme is much better than Qantas.
United food is LOUSY!!!Plastic everything, disgusting Starbucks coffee, so-so service. However, we will use them again for economy reasons.

Have only flown Qantas to New Zealand, and they upgraded us to Business, which was lovely.

Hi,,just flew in yesterday on Quantas, great food,,very narrow seats and they do lean back so the person in front is very close. The stewards were all very nice and came by with water all the time. I always bring extra food and fruit and water. We flew over on Air NewZealand which was lousy..
I'd pick Quantas as I've flown United years ago and it wasn't very good from my memory...

Qantas Airways is the best choice when it comes to flying down under. Agree with the last message that was posted. What I like about Qantas. The seating onboard is all right. The Non-Stop service. I do like. LAX to MEL or LAX to SYD. The Customer Service on Qantas is acceptable. Codeshare with American Airlines. If you want to earn Airline Miles.

QANTAS all the way. I frequently fly the Los Angeles to Sydney route and find the staff and crew to be the best in the business. The foods usually very decent, free drinks and you get a good introduction to Aussie culture from the crew and inflight videos. The seats are decent with the best being on the flanks of aisles 72 and 73. And as "Rain Man" said, "Qantas never crashes."

Hi Flyer:

Hey put your real name man.

No comparison - we have flown both.
United - once, QANTAS over and over again.

Arrogant - I don't think so. Oldest fleet in the world - I don't think so either. About the safest in the world and I think you will find most aviation experts would agree.

Liz,
I flew Continental when I went to Australia so can't help you there.

But, United is in the midst of some very tough union negotiations/contract extensions. There labor relations are a mess right now.

President Bush will not allow a strike. However, you could see some wildcat labor actions (sickouts, work slowdowns, etc.) until this gets resolved.

One story I heard from a friend: He sat NEXT to head of the United Pilot's union coming out of Chicago recently. The pilot proceded to tell him that United management gave the Union Representatives on the Board of Directors 15-minutes notice BEFORE they told the Board about the deal with U.S. Airways. The pilot went ripshit and apparently got major concessions to prevent a labor action.

Bottom-line, their morale is terrible and will be for some time. Aviod them!

Haven't flown United to Aus but loved Qantas. The food was surprisingly the best airline food we've seen, the staff were very nice, the wings on the headrest help you sleep and there were five movies from NY to Syndey. And, as Arthur mentioned, because of the codeshare, that's just under 20,000 AAdvantage miles on American.
Lucian

We just returned from six weeks and sixteen flights (14 on Qantas and two on US Air) between New Zeland and Australia. There was never a charge for haedsets or drinks. The service was the best we have ever experienced and we do a great deal of flying. Qantas is the only way to fly to NZ and/or Oz. I think the individual that was critical of Qantas must work for another airline!
