I think uluru is worth the money, I found it a magical place when I visited (albeit a long time ago now). It had a profound impact on me, and I think that it either seems to have this effect on you or it doesn't. I know some also like kata juta more than uluru too, but I found kata juta a bit creepy. Maybe it was all the wind!
I had a friend that went last year and she did a helicopter flight over both uluru and kata juta and highly recommended this. I also did one over the bungle bungles and at Mitchell Falls in WA and while they weren't cheap, they were both well worth the money. So that would be a tip from me. get up in the air and take your camera!

I've visited OZ six times, and have been to the NT twice. My fondest memories from my first trip (1988) are of a 13 day tour of the outback from Alice to Darwin. Granted, the OP doesn't want to spend that much time there, but the friendships I developed with the 43 Aussies on that bus are very special to me.
I'd chime in with others who are suggesting that a 3-4 day group tour of the area is worth while. I'd agree with that! Even honeymooners could have a good time with the friendly Aussie folks around the camp fire or swimming pool at night, downing a few NT Drafts!!

I just went a few months ago and loved it. Yes the rooms are expensive but I have always wanted to go. Did some great tours - the walk around uluru, called the Uluru Walk was just great. It was really hot though in summer but ther pool was popular
