Uluru

We plan to visit Uluru while in Australia in March. We are 70 and not hikers. Is one night there sufficient? Or should we plan to stay longer?

One night doesn’t quite work. You spend the better part of day 1 getting to Uluru (since you’ll probably be flying in from somewhere) and then getting settled into your hotel (check-in Time is usually 3 or 4pm) - by that time you wn’t have too much time left to actually see anything. Then the following day you’d have to check out of your hotel and fly off to your next d stination - again not leaving much time to do/see anything.

Two nights minimum would be better. We stayed 3 nights and found it to be “just right”.

Yes and no

Actually, if all you want to do is "see" the rock itself - Urulu, one night would work. You can fly directly into Yulara early in the day (take the earliest possible flight) and out late the next day.

How you would get to places to see it would require some investigation. Easiest would be to rent a car from the airport. Get checked in to the hotel, wander around the small townsite a bit, then in early evening drive to the sunset viewing point, not too far from Yulara. The next morning drive to one of the access point to the trail that circumnavigates the rock. You don't have to walk the trail, but it would give you a chance to actually touch the rock and to wander a little ways along the trail to get the beginnings of a feel for the rock. Then hurry back to the airport in time for your flight.

...however...

I would not recommend that. 2 nights, one full day would be better as a minimum.

My wife and I, in our mid 70's, just now got back from a 30 day trip to Australia during which the spent 3 nights at Uluru (actually, at its nearby townsite - Yulara - the only feasible option): 2 full days + arrival afternoon & departure morning. For us, that was too short a time ... we would have liked to hike more and spend more time in the Olgas, which were as interesting, if not more interesting, than Uluru itself.

A trip report, with photos, is in the works ... hopefully will post the first of several parts over the next week
