nelsonian, we used Europcar. The pick up office is right out the front of the arrival terminal, paperwork was negligible so far as I remember, and the chap running the actual collection and return was a bit of a "lad" who had what in Aus probably passes as a sense of humour. All that said, the car did what it said on the tin and was absolutely fine, with no fuss when we returned it.

I use car rental consolidaters to get the best deal, a bit like airline prices, the prices can vary immensely. Try companies such as Holiday Auto or the one I have been using more recently is rentalcars.com
The biggest catch at the airport is they try to say you are not fully insured and they up sell insurance to you, usually at close to the price of the original rental amount
I use a credit card which gives a basic $2250 excess insurance, I can increase it for a small charge or I take out a travel insurance such as with budget direct that includes insurance for the excess amount for a lot less than what the rental company offers, plus you are insured for the other parts of your trip
