Trip in 2001

My best friend and I are planning a three or four week vacation in Australia right after our graduation from high school. We will both be 18 and will we be having problems with anything because of our ag? Getting around, etc.

Generally you wont have any problems in Oz - there are loads of young travellers all over the country. 18 is the legal age for drinking, so you will be able to get into bars, clubs, etc. However, you will probably have difficulty trying to rent a car at your age.
A travelling option is the Oz Experience buses that travel all over the country. For something a bit less raucous, you could try McCaffertys or Greyhound bus passes. You can get on and off wherever you like.
Whatever you do, don't hitchhike.
What time of year will you be travelling? That can have a big bearing on suggested places to visit.

We will be traveling in June I know that it will be winter in Oz and spring in the US. So, I am not really sure about what would or would not be open.

June is winter in Oz, but the perfect time to visit the northern parts. Far north Queensland, around the Barrier Reef will be warm and mostly dry. Also the best time for visiting the Red Centre and Kakadu in the northern territory.
If you want to visit a big city, Sydney will be your best option. Generally sunny and dry in winter, although a little cool.
