Travelling to NZ/Fiji - Recommendations?

We are travelling to NZ (arrive Dec. 27) for one month and then on to Fiji for a week. We are planning on renting a car and travelling all over NZ. Recommendations for accomodation (1 nt. in Auckland) and then on to the fishing areas of Taupo and south and again in Fiji would be greatly appreciated.

Your trip sounds alot like what we have planned for December 1999. I am pushing for Fiji, but rest of group wants to go onto Australia. Hope you don't mind me taking some of your info when you get it. Thanks.
If you want really "luxe", by all means stay at the Huka Lodge near Taupo - my number one choice of places I would like to return to. I also have the name of a less elegant but very nice lodge southwest of Taupo with excellent fishing and guide service. I will have to look it up but will be glad to if you would like. Let me know. NZ is heavenly. You are wise to allow a month. Also have names of places to stay north and south of Auckland, which I will also be happy to look up if you need them.

Hi Denise and also for Chris who gave you a note also. We wrote the Adventure section for Fodors Travel guide and as well we gave them a whole fishing section, salt and freshwater for all of New Zealand so go and buy it and read it up. You will also read about us, Kiwi Dundee Adventures in the Coromandel section and in the Adventure section. Fodors have also listed us as one of New Zealands natural treasures, and we are the only people!! You should definetly come through the Coromandel Peninsular which is east of Auckland and one of NZ's most beautiful parts, don't just travel the normal "blue ribbon" route. We can give you some great ideas for touring as well as wonderful unknown accommodations. Email us if you want some more info.
Best Regards to you both,
Doug and Jan.
