Train Sydney airport to Taree

My Dad is travelling to Sydney from NZ. On arrival at Sydney airport he needs to get to Taree (assume train is the best option). Are these trips best booked in advance? He will be retuning 8 days later. He will only have carry on bags for the flight so not much luggage. I've never used the trains in Aussie so any tips and info appreciated!
Thanks

I would book train in advance if you determine that this is the best option.

I would look at flights (assuming he has a reasonable travel budget) or bus.

This is a list of train and bus services from Sydney to Taree.

Hi , the first suggestion I want to share with you is book your tickets in advance.

If he wants to catch the train, he will have to get himself from the Airport to Sydney Central (only a few stops on a suburban train from the Airport to Central), where he will need to take the XPT Regional Train to Taree. He can book his tickets in advance online - https://transportnsw.info/regional .. It is a long train trip, 5.5 hours from Sydney central..

Whilst more expensive, flying would be a far easier option, assuming the flights line up, as there is usually only 1 or 2 each day.. Fly Pelican FlyPelican - Your local NSW Airline
