Sydney - a great place to visit

Gee I got excited this morning ( for about 10 seconds) when reading that Sydney is in the top 5 most popular places to visit - that was until I saw the other contenders
* Bangkok
* Buenos Aires

* Cape Town

* Sydney

* Florence

Now I have been to all of those cities and Florence would be the only other city that I would think would be interesting to visit. The last time I flew into Thailand I went by taxi to the hotel and did not come out for two days until I got the taxi back to the airport. It would have to be one of the most stinking, dirty places on earth but I guess some people would find that interesting. Buenos Aires is OK but nothing to write home about, likewise Capetown. Who compiles this rubbish and do people actually take any notice of it? Most of all how are the places graded?

Or Prague, Saltzburg, St Petersburg, Moscow, Stockholm, Istanbul etc etc etc and no Melbourn. This was in this morning's SMH.

The SMH must be getting worse. I live in Sydney (and love it) but there's no way it would make it into my top 5 cities to visit, I don't think it would even be in my top 10.

I can understand that it might feature in good places to live, the real estate horror not withstanding, but it hardly has the wealth and depth of urban delights that you get in New York, London, Paris, Berlin, Sao Paulo etc.

Everyone has their favourites but if Lizzy couldn't get excited about Cape Town and BA then I guess her receptors have a limited range.

Cape Town, in particular has the wonderful Table Mountain; a fascinating multi ethnic history (far older than Sydney); a vibrant waterfront, and vineyards in the hinterland. Oh, and penguins and seals too. Buenos Aires isn't so different from Madrid - and I like Madrid!! Well maybe I just like Spanish culture.

And I loved BKK the first time I went - it just wears off about repeated visits!!

I'd list Venice any time before Florence or Rome. And Instanbul must make the top 10.

Conclusion - lists are stupid and should be ignored by anyone who prefers to make up their own mind.

I cannot work out if you agree with me or disagree with me Afterall. I love BA and I love Capetown but neither of them would come in front of places like St Petersburg, Paris and Prague

Anyway I don't care much afterall because it has left those places that are fantastic & off the tourist routes and then we can have more of them without all the people in the World being there.
