Survey About adelaide

Hello forum users,
This is a last minute survey for my Tourism major in year 12.

I've been browsing thsee forums for a while now after reading an article on Internet Negativity which provided this forum as a source of some negativity.

As a result of the article I chose to do the impact of internet negativity on South Australia's tourism, and just hoping some forum users can answer a few questions to help me with my assignment.

1. Have you seen any internet negativity directed at Adelaide on these forums or around the internet? (eg. Adelaide sucks! or "Don't go there its a hole!"

2. Do you see many attempts to correct this negativity or many suggestions of places in Adelaide which make it a good place to travel?

3. Do you believe that negative comments have an effect on Internet Negativity?

4. Do you believe the growth of the internet combined with the growth of negative comments will cause problems, even if they are miniscule, for Adelaide's tourism in the future?

Thanks for considering the questions and I am really hoping some of the users can answer

ScorpO, before replying I'd be interested to know where that article naming Fodors as a source of "negativity" was printed. Could you please cite the newspaper or journal concerned, with its issue date? Did the article accuse Fodors posters of negativity towards Adelaide specifically?

OK - let's make sure you get at least one response from this forum:

1. Have you seen any internet negativity directed at Adelaide on these forums or around the internet? (eg. Adelaide sucks! or "Don't go there its a hole!"

- No. In any event I'd expect any negative comments on this forum to be expressed more thoughtfully than the examples cited (maybe even punctuated correctly!)

2. Do you see many attempts to correct this negativity or many suggestions of places in Adelaide which make it a good place to travel?

- Yes to the second; there have been numerous posts citing good reasons to visit Adelaide.

3. Do you believe that negative comments have an effect on Internet Negativity?

- Sorry, don't understand the question - it seems tautological.

4. Do you believe the growth of the internet combined with the growth of negative comments will cause problems, even if they are miniscule, for Adelaide's tourism in the future?

- Not necessarily. A negative comment may generate convincing counter-arguments.

I'm not sure why you'd assume (as the question seems to) that negative comments as a proportion of the total will grow.

Good luck!

Hi ScorpO -

1. No - I don't recall seeing any negativity towards Adelaide on this forum, but I have seen it referred to as a "hop off" point rather than a destination.

2. Yes - When questions pop up regarding Adelaide, the poster invaribly gets a positive response with suggestions of what to see and do in Adelaide.

3. I don't get this question either

4. No - the Internet is an invaluable resource, but as far as forums are concerned, I think we all realize that one's opinion is exactly that, an opinion. And who's to stay the comments will be negative anyway?

Neil - you sent me to my dictionary with your usage of "tautological". My new word for the day.

Hope my answers aren't too late for your survey.

1. No, I have not seen any comments on this site or other travel advice sites which were specifically negative towards Adelaide.

2. When I have seen negative comments about a city or attraction, I then tend to see follow-up comments from people extolling the virtues of those places.

3. ????

4. I do not foresee any negative impact on tourism, even miniscule, in Adelaide due to possible negative comments about the city. Often people already have an opinion about a place when they post a question on this and other sites. They just want some confirmation of their opinion. So if a person already had a negative opinion of Adelaide when they posted here, it is unlikely that a few positive comments would change their opinion. Likewise, if the person already had a positive opinion of Adelaide, it is unlikely that a few negative comments would change their opinion either.

I actually wrote a published newspaper article about how Adelaide is perceived in Lonely Planet and Fodors.

In Lonely Planet there is a lot of negativity, and it sometimes described rather unkindly as boring and unexciting - and often worse.

However, in Fodors it generally receives very glowing reports - primarily, I suppose, because the Fodors clientele is more sophisticated and discerning, and not seeking partying non-stop for 24 hours day in and day out.
