Reef visit from Port Douglas or Cairns?

My husband and I plan a daytrip to see the reef in the next month. I am wondering if this should be done from Port Douglas or from Cairns. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

Doesn't matter really, its just what is suitable for you depending where you are staying.
I note today that an American has died from the sting of a Irukunji jellyfish somewhere up there. So make sure wherever you go on the reef that you heed any warnings about Jellyfish. Even though they should be well and truely out of season by the time you are there.
Shalen,
You can do tours from Cairns or Port Douglas, to different areas, but a lot of the tours start in Cairns, bus up to PD (at least 1 hour) then go from there. So you waste at least 2 hours sitting in a bus. We stayed in PD, walked to the marina which is at the end of the main street and got on the boat from there. Much better in my opinion. We went with Quicksilver which are a huge operation but very professional and we would go with them again. Some people prefer a smaller boat/crowd but it didn't feel like a lot of people on the day.
Hope this helps.
Kay

Take the public ferry out of Cairns with a cooler of food out to Green Island. Its very cheap, and a good time for all. (eating at Green Island is expensive).
