In Cairns I highly recommend Tjapukai for an Aboriginal cultural experience http://www.tjapukai.com.au/
The Atherton Tablelands is very scenic, that is the place to go for wildlife too. http://www.athertontablelands.com.au/pages.asp?code=500

For birds, platypus, kangaroos, rock wallabies and possums in the wild http://www.alanswildlifetours.com.au/
Our possums are not closely related to yours and are very cute.
