Papeete stopover
Hi,
We are a retired couple in our 70s planning a 2-month trip to New Zealand in January 2025. We traveled a lot but we never visited French Polynesian or New Zealand. On our way to Auckland, we have the option of stopping in Papeete for a period of rest. I know it will be the rainy season but will that prevent us from enjoying the beaches? We were thinking of stopping for 5 to 7 days. Our budget is not unlimited. Can we find comfortable accommodation facing the beach? Is Papeete as a stopover a good idea?
Thank you.

I wouldn't hesitate to spend a few days visiting Papeete during January. At that time of year, you can usually expect lots of sunny days with occasional fairly brief (but sometimes heavy) and localized showers lasting minutes rather than hours. It is not unusual for it to rain in one area and be bright and sunny 1/4 mile away. We were there for several days during that time period and had excellent weather with only a few minutes of rain one afternoon during our stay.
Like almost all places in the tropics, you can find accommodations in all price ranges which can vary considerably depending on location, amenities and, of course the view and proximity to the sea. Obviously, the closer to the beach the accommodations are, the higher the room rate. Since you didn't give a dollar budget range you are willing to pay for accommodations, it impossible to make any meaningful recommendations. I suggest, you do some basic internet searches using such topics as "Papeete Resorts", "10 best Hotels in Papeete", etc. to get a feel for room prices during the period you are planning to visit. Once you narrow down your choices to hotels/resorts that are in your price range you can read online reviews to help narrow your choices even further. You can then follow up on this forum to get additional feedback on those hotels from contributors.

January in Papeete is a lovely time to stop—rain showers are usually brief and scattered, leaving plenty of sunshine for the beaches. During our visit around that time, we only had a few quick downpours, with clear skies most days.
For accommodations, beachfront options range from budget-friendly pensions to higher-end resorts. Since prices vary widely, I’d suggest browsing sites like Booking.com or TripAdvisor with filters for ‘ocean view’ and your preferred budget. Reading recent guest reviews will help narrow down the best fit for your needs.
A 5–7 day stopover sounds perfect to unwind before New Zealand. If you find a few hotels you like, feel free to ask here for firsthand impressions!
