NZ then a "quickie" to AUS and GBR
Just wondering what anyone would think of this plan...
Fly (home to) LAX to Auckland, Auckland to Christchurch.
10-day auto tour of south island (Christchurch to Christchurch)
Fly Christchurch to Cairns
1-day tour of GBR
Fly Cairns to Sydney--->1 or 2 days?
Fly Syd to LAX (then home)
Is there a smarter way to do this? Should I start in Aus then go to NZ? This is likely my only chance to be in this part of the world so I need to see the GBR or I will regret it, even though it is a tight squeeze.
In case I get a lot of people worried that this is too much, I am not vacationing to relax, I am vacationing to see the world. I'll relax on my comfy couch at home.

Crazy!
A Downunder equivalent is planning a trip in California and then saying I must see the Empire State Building so I will fly to New York for ONE DAY!
Australia is a big country - nearly as big as the US. New Zealand is smaller and we are not that close together. 3000 km separates us.
Christchurch to Cairns is an 8 hour flight so that will take all day. 2 nights would be needed to get one day for the GBR.
However I really relate to the agony of deciding where to go and thinking you may never be back...
Reduce your time on the road trip. 5-6 road trip in NZ and 5-6 days in Australia.
The GBR stretches a long way...could you see it a but further south? Airlie Beach is closer to Sydney with many day trips for the GBR and also the beautiful Whitsunday islands. They have a small airport so you would have to fly through Sydney or Brisbane.
What about :
LAX to Christchurch
road trip of 5-6 days ending in Queenstown
fly Queenstown to Sydney (3 hours) then fly to Airlie Beach (2.5 hours)
3-4 days Airlie Beach then back to Sydney
Home from Sydney to LAX.

<<<Is there a smarter way to do this?>>
There are thousands of smarter ways to do this.
Start by adding 2-3 weeks.
<<I am not vacationing to relax, I am vacationing to see the world.>>
By definition a vacation means an 'extended period of recreation'. You're planning an extended period of entrapment within airplanes and airports. You'll be looking at the world from 40,000 feet above it.
Good luck.

Look up the flight schedules for your planned NZ - Australia 3 days.
That should give you your answer.
Regrettably, neither your eagerness to see the GBR & Sydney, nor your limited holiday time, shrink the distances or time involved to traverse them.
Add your extra days to NZ. Come back & see some of Australia another time.

You will be able to go back. Fares are coming down like crazy. I just had an email offer about Qantas to fly from LAX for USD999 roundtrip, and Air New Zealand/United for similar amounts.
So listen to those who poo-poo your Christchurch-Cairns idea. Reason will prevail, and you'll be back Downunder before you know it.
