North Island Trip Help Requested
I'll be arriving in Wellington on August 15th for a ten day trip to Auckland. Where should I stop. Currently my schedule is:

Wellington = 2 Days
Taupo = 2 Days
Rotorua = 3 Days
Auckland = 3 days

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Am I missing any "can't miss spots"?

Thanks!

Best,
Annemarie

Hi, Annemarie,
If time permits I'd recommend a half day or so in Napier, a city composed almost exclusively of fabulous art deco buildings built following a big earthquake in the 30s. Ought to be a UN World Heritage site IMO. (If it were me I'd reduce the time in Rotorua by a day to permit it.)

Annemarie, I'd agree with John that you should try to fit in the Hawkes Bay. Napier and Hastings are interesting in terms of history, architecture and wineries.
My personal feeling is that if you are driving north from Wellington, you can pretty much see Taupo as you drive through en route to Rotorua. Both are towns built around lakes and feature thermal springs, fishing and Maori culture (although Taupo is somewhat less touristy and sulphuric that Rotorua). Two nights should cover both easily, and give you more time in the Hawkes Bay.
Given you won't really have time to see the Bay of Islands, I think your itinerary looks great otherwise.
Have a wonderful trip.
We were in NZ last year on holidays. I agree that you can see Taupo as you drive through from Wellington to Rotorua. I'd use that time to see the Bay of IslandsWhen you are in Auckland, take the ferry across to Devonport - about 10 minutes. Nice little town and pleasant walk to lookout over Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf.

I don't know if it will be worth your time to spend 3 days in Rotorua... Lake Taupo is cool however. If you can, I'd recommend heading a bit north of Auckland to the Huraki Gulf (Orewa) for a day trip, it's only about a 30min or so drive from Auckland. Also the Coromandel Peninsula is great, on the east coast. As well Mt Maunganui on the east coast is worth a stop - small beach/surf town. Enjoy!

Dear Annemarie,

Reduce your time in Rotorua to two 2 days, 1 day in Auckland is more than enough, it's just another city. Use the extra time to visit the Bay of Islands and beautiful Russell, 3 hrs North of Auckland.
Rich in Maori and Eurpoean history with a myriad of water based activities from sailing, to swimming with the Dolphins, Kauri Forests and pristine beaches as well as the warmest weather in August.
Stay at Kimberley Lodge, overlooking Russell and the bay.
