New Zealand Traffic During Easter

Hello! I will be in New Zealand in the month of April. We plan on flying out from Auckland to Queenstown the day of Good Friday. I hear Easter is a big holiday with lots of traffic in New Zealand.... is traffic mainly leaving the city, coming in or both?

Our plan is to drive from Tongariro National Park on Good Friday morning and catch a plane that afternoon. I’m trying to figure out how much more time to a lot for traffic and when to book our flight!

Thanks in advance!

You could look at flying from Rotorua to Queenstown instead of returning to Auckland, about $100 for the flights.

That's a very good idea from Tom to fly from Rotorua to Queenstown instead.

This link to an article about this year's Easter weekend traffic congestion (Auckland area) should give you an idea of what is possible.
