New Zealand Honeymoon

I am trying to plan a honeymoon in New Zealand for January. We love beach settings and relaxing. Also like the idea of feeling close to other activities (hiking, exploring, sightseeing, etc.) Where in New Zealand is the right place for this? I was looking into Auckland but now am really confused. We are willing to pay $300-$500 NZ per night. Any thoughts on city and lodging.

Maestro,

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! I've planned several honeymoons for clients to NZ and every single couple has loved it!

You don't say how long you have for a honeymoon, which is a consideration when it comes to planning; as distances, flights, etc, between the N. & So. Island is a major factor when planning your trip. While I know clients always want to see and do everything, I also know that after all the planning and emotion that goes into a wedding, you don't want to stress yourself out by putting SO much into your itinerary that you need a vacation after the honeymoon!

Auckland is a large cosmopolitan city, but there are some great wilderness tours as well as wineries just outside the city that you can do as day trips; then there's the Bay of Islands for beaches, sightseeing. Going to the South Island, there's Abel Tasman National Park; Nelson, more wineries, whale watching / swimming with dolphins; glaciers; Queenstown, Otago Peninsula, just to mention a few...all of which offer lovely accommodations for honeymooners.

Just wanted to say that we honemooned in NZ. It was just about the best place we could have chosen after the kafuffle of the wedding. We chose the south island - spending time in Christchurch, Hanmer Springs, Queenstown, Mt. Cook, Te Anua, Milford Sound and Dunedin (we went for the more relaxed tour). Milford Sound is fantastic we did an overnighter on the Milford Mariner and can well recommend that.

Paihia and Russell in the Bay of Islands would be a great place for a romantic honeymoon. The setting is absolutely stunning and there are loads of activities available here.

Gisborne on the east coast of the nth island is a great destination if beaches are what you are looking for. The weather in summer is generally fantastic and the beaches are great and safe for swimming.
The East Cape region is a bit off the beaten track but is still popular with tourists wanting something a bit different.

Taupo is a great spot for activities, sightseeing, adventure and hiking but is nowhere near a beach. It does have a great lake with all water activites imaginable.

January is the high season in NZ so it might pay to get some bookings organised before you come.

Good luck and congratulations!

To be more specific, we would have 10-12 days to spend in NZ. Tropical setting would be great for part of the trip. Would love to mix in hiking and other outdoor activities. We do not want to be in a rush sightseeing and never having an opportunity to rest and enjoy the trip.

Thanks. Everyone is so helpful.
