To pass the time, I knit while on a flight. I know, in the U.S., that circular knitting needles are allowed. I have been told that both yarn and circular needles are not allowed on US-Australia flights. Does anyone know if this is correct? Thanks for any information.

continued .. damn that button!! yes, love to read but you can have too much of a good thing. A friend walzed in with knitting needles and a bag of odd balls of wool. A scarf was the thing!!

Clever friend! I hadn't knitted for years, but it was a brilliant way of passing the time. Very therapeutic.

My wife just knitted her way around the world - ten or so flights so far and nary a peep from any security people about her knitting.

She left a partially-finished poncho in an airline lounge in Johannesburg and had to go cold turkey between South Africa and Australia, but she quickly purchased replacement wool, needles and paraphernalia in Oz and set about re-doing her efforts between Oz and New Zealand, then across the Pacific

Actually, just make sure you check it out properly (with airline, or aust government website).

Here in Australia, we are not allowed to take knitting needles onto internal flights anymore, so it would not surprise me if the same went for international flights into Australia.

My wife doesn't have any problem taking knitting needles on the plane in the US, but has had problems in Italy, Greece, and China, even with circular needles. It may depend on the attutide of the security person.

For our upcoming trip to South Africa, she just got Denise interchangeable needles, which has detachable ends, so she hopes there will not be a problem taking them onboard..
