When I traveled alone, I often asked strangers to take my picture with my camera. Never had any problems. I usually asked fellow hostelers, or tourists--kindly looking middle-aged Americans or older women, in most cases. Just use your judgement; you'll be fine! And you'll definitely want pictures of yourself.

ALL the time. I've never had a problem and never been refused. Even when I couldn't speak the language, I would make eye contact, smile, hold out the camera and ask "Photo?" as a question. Again, I've never been refused by a tourist. Wait-staff have always accomodated with a smile - including the waiter in Paris that appeared to be from central casting playing the role of snooty French waiter.

And I ALWAYS stop and offer to take a picture of a couple or a group when so all can be in the shot.

Take a disposable camera if you feel more comfortable, but I think the source of that fear was just an inventive commercial.

A tripod and self timer can work wonders - also increases the sharpness of your shot.

Strangers are often kind - if I'm travelling alone and must have a photograph of myself I usually ask a respectable looking passerby to assist.

I would be more afraid that they'd drop it, rather than steal it.

I am interested in visiting Australia in late October or even early December for a period of 2-1/2 weeks. I would like to see Sydney, the sunshine coast, the great barrier reef, ayers rock and possibly those Thermal Pools I keep hearing about.
I would love to obtain info on an independant tour covering those areas.
Please provide any information.
thanks very much!
