Rotorua is a must. Bay of Islands very pretty - make sure you get the ferry to Russell and wander around. When we were in Auckland, we took the ferry across to Devonport and climbed to a lookout overlooking Auckland - really spectacular views.
We stayed at the Novotel, fairly ordinary but central.

Suzie:
When in Auckland we stay at the Rydges Hotel. Right in the business district and one block from the Sky Tower and casino. 4 star hotel. About NZ$100 for a double. NZ$40 taxi fare from the airport.
You'll love Auckland. Rotorua, as posted above is also a must.
Too bad you're not going to the South Island. We loved Christchurch and Queenstown. Totally different from the North Island. But, as long as you're going to New Zealand, you won't go wrong. Get ready for a great visit.
John
We've stayed at the Hyatt in Auckland and found it very comfortable and (for a business type hotel) very friendly - good views of the harbor from that side of the building.

If time permits and especially if you're an architecture buff, a visit to Napier and Hawkes Bay is a must. Napier was rebuilt after a big earthquake in the '30s completely in Art Deco style - a knockout if you like that period (which we do). Good local wine, too.

We stayed at the Hyatt when in Aukland and found it to be the one place we wouldn't recommend to others. It was the only place we thought wasn't friendly and NOT worth the money - even with half off. We will definitely be staying elsewhere next time.

hi suzie,
we stayed at the sebel suites hotel right on the harbour. the rooms with a hearbour view are outstanding! very convenient, walking distance to the central business and shopping district and since it's right on the harbour, extremely convenient to the ferries. i really enjoyed taking the night harbour dinner cruise with the pride of auckland and taking the ferry to devonport. wish i was there for just a day.
tina

Stay at one of the serviced apartments/all suite hotels- they are great value. The Sebel (mentioned above) is nice but a little noisy because of all the bars/restaurants around it, The Quayside is quieter (I think I paid ~NZ$250 for a one bedroom)or you can stay at the Somerset Metropolis (probably the nicest one) which is very central and next to a park.
