Hostess gifts to bring from USA

This trip is coming together in the most amazing way. I have now received invitations to stay with people who are friends of friends. In other words I don't know them. What would be appropriate gifts that they can use and enjoy?

I live in a part of Canada that produces maple syrup, so I take that as gifts (in cans, not bottles). It is always appreciated.

I don't have anything in particular to suggest but Australia has very strict quarantine laws, so I would tend to avoid food items and any plant material, including wooden items. Whatever you do bring should be declared - hopefully it'll be ok and allowed in. Perhaps an easier alternative is to simply take your hosts out to dinner or something similar?

As long as it is commercially processed and packaged it will pass quarantine. Hand made wood items would need to be inspected, but should be fine. Certainly check first AND declare it. BIG fine for not declaring even if it is safe.

As to presents. I would suggest something small and unique to your area. For instance, a local artist here paints Gum leaves and makes them into book marks. Diaries with local photos etc. They would not expect anything big.

When you are here a nice bottle of wine for dinner or paying for them if you go out should suffice. If you have been travelling in Australia before getting to them a bottle of wine from your travels or something similar etc. Something useful.

I would hope it is more about the gesture than the item.

A bunch of flowers wouldn't go astray either.

Perfect responses, thank you. I usually give the captain at the restaurant my credit card before the hosts have a chance to get the check. It saves a lot of arguments.
Am off tomorrow and am so excited.

Have a wonderful trip, Nywoman. Enjoy the eclipse. It should be a spectacular event.
