Help on using the computer so people will know I'm still alive...

Hello all: <BR> <BR>I posted a little while ago (Re: Please help so I don't kill myself)...I will be going to Oz for 3 weeks by myself. I researched info on bringing and using my laptop, but I do have one question... <BR> <BR>How common are the US RJ-11 jacks in Australia? Obviously, that's what we use here in the US, and I found on a website info that stated that they are in Oz too...along with the RJ-45 jack and the australian. Should I buy an adapter for the other ones if I want to use my computer for internet access? Help would be appreciated, as I want to let folks back home know what I'm doing (and I don't want to be hunting for cyber cafes everywhere) Thanks!

Kristian: <BR>Can't answer your jack question but I can assure you that you won't have to look far for a cybercafe in Australia. They're plentiful. We travelled from Sydney to Melbourne, to Cairns, to Alice Springs and to Tasmania with no problem finding one. They're even more plentiful in New Zealand. <BR>John

Hi John: <BR> <BR>Thanks for your help...I did hear that they are common, but I'd like to bring my computer because I use it to write as well. Can anyone else help?

Have a look at http://www.kropla.com/phones2.htm There are pictures of phone plugs so you can see exactly what we use.

Hi - The wall plate connection for telephone lines varies from a rather large plug/socket combo (called 610/611) to the more recent RJ45 - I think that an RJ11 will function OK with the latter. That said my preference when travelling is to use unplug the telephone handset end and use the telephone cord - this works 9 out of 10 times in connecting to the inbuilt modem socket in my Toshiba Tecra 8100 - Hope this helps - Graham
