Help in New Zealand

Greetings, Traveling solo to NZ the end of Oct 08. Flying into AKL and have that half day, next full day then next day (Sat) evening flight back to USA. Done the online research but need suggestions on the full day tour, north to Bay of Islands or South to Rotorua or to glow worm cave?
Hotel downtown (Crowne Plaza) or suburb?
In order, what do I NOT want to miss on the two half days?
Kelly Tarltons
Museum
Zoo
Mt Eden
Saturday market
Other?

Thank you in advance
Thomas

Thomas, I suspect the reason your post has gone unanswered so far is that nobody can quite believe that you're travelling so far for such an abbreviated (and probably part-jetlaqged) visit. Did you win the flights in a bet, or what? Is there no chance that you can reschedule to another time with a view to doing some justice to the country (i.e., at least 2 weeks)? I'm sorry, but I'll have to leave any detailed advice to others.

Do I understand correctly that you'll be in NZ for two days?

Are you passing through on your way elsewhere?

I'm assuming you're flying into Auckland from someplace much closer (like Australia) and stopping for a few days before you head back to the U.S., so there will be no jet lag to conquer.

With one full day, I'd say head north to Bay of Islands. Much more scenic.

For your half days, I did go to a number of museums, Mt. Eden and the markets and they were a good way to spend time.

I really enjoyed taking the ferry from Auckland to Devonport and just walking around Devonport. You get a great view of the Auckland skyline from the deck of the ferry. Devonport has a number of nice B&Bs if you don't want to stay in the city.

If you decide to stay downtown, try Elliott Street Apartments Hotel. Great location (just 2 blocks from the Sky Tower) and more space to spread out in than traditional hotel room. I got an excellent rate online. Parnell, Newmarket or Ponsonby are also places you may consider when seeking accommodation that isn't right in the city center.

Correct, I extended my layover through NZ after two weeks in Australia. Definitely agree I need more time but want to take full advantage of the limited time I have. Thank you Ceidleh
