Hayman/Hamilton Is. or GBR

We will be going to AU and NZ in mid-Oct. through Nov. I was wondering if anyone has been to either Hayman and Hamilton Islands? Which is nicer? Also, how would you compare the Whitsunday Islands compared to GBR.

Thanks in advance.

Elsa

Hayman and Hamilton Islands are both in the Whitsunday Islands Group. Hamilton is a bigger island. It has its own airstrip, loads of shops, restaurants, activities, etc and some variety of accommodation types. Hayman is a very expensive, exclusive 5-star resort. Certainly much nicer, but you pay for it.

Both are just off the coast, so if you want to get to the Reef you need to organise a day-trip.

When you say "compared to the GBR" I assume you mean staying on the mainland further north, eg Cairns. The Reef lies about an hour or two away from the coast by boat, so whether staying along the coast or on the Whitsunday islands you will need to get a boat out to the Reef.
Personally, I prefer to stay on the mainland at places like Port Douglas as it offers much more to see and do (and is generally much cheaper). Maybe you could combine your trip with a few days on an island and a few on the mainland.

Matt,

Since you seem to know the area in my previous question quite well, I was wondering if Hamilton is "tacky?"

We do plan to stay in Port Douglas about 3 nights, but I didn't know if it was also worth going to Hamilton and/or Hayman (which I know is expensive. The way I figure it is, I'll probably never get to AU again so I might as well splurge. If I don't spent it, Uncle Sam will!!!!!!!!)

Thanks

Elsa

I don't think Hamilton is tacky, just busier and more laid-back, almpost like a small, costal town. Its a big island, so you can find isolation, if you wish.
If you want to splurge, Hayman is the place to go.
If you can, try and save more than 3 nights for Port Douglas as, in addition to the Reef, there is some great touring nearby (north to Mossman Gorge, Daintree River, Cape Tribulation and south-west to the Atherton Tableland).
I think George Harrison (from the Beatles) owns a holiday house there, maybe there's a chance you might see him. If so can you ask him why he wrote 'I Me Mine'?
