Bookmarking this. But also, we are planning our June 2011 trip. So flying into Sydney we would probably want to go to Adelaide first (go the furthest south early on for weather reasons) and then drive this to Melbourne. I always was sad I did not get to drive this road when I studied abroad in Adelaide years ago. This is stupid, but there isn't a better way to drive is there (Melbourne to Adelaide vs. Adelaide to Melbourne)?
How windy and narrow are the roads? I am hoping not as bad as the roads in Scotland (Isle of Skye to be exact).

Melbourne to Adelaide is the best way to drive. The reason being is that you are on the left and all the best views are on your left. The roads are good and well signposted with passing opportunities in the hilly sections. Some sections are windy, but they are not not narrow and not country lane ways.

No it wasn't a stupid question and I think it is worth changing your plans. The other aspect is that when you leave Melbourne you are at the GOR in about an hour(Torquay)wheras from Adelaide you are driving for at least six to seven hours before Warnambool and the official start of the GOR from that end. I would definitely drive from Melbourne. http://www.greatoceanrd.org.au/

I agree with Downunder that it is better driving from Melbourne to Adelaide rather than reverse. I personally don't think there is a great difference in terms of views either way (having done it many times) but it is much easier in that nearly all the roadside stops to pull over for view/photos are on the lefthand side. If you are coming from Adelaide you have to cross the stream of traffic in order to pull over and, when leaving, you need to turn right across the traffic again as opposed to simply turning left.

Don't get in to too much of a bother about it Amelie. If it makes virtually no difference to your travel plans, yes, do Melbourne to Adelaide. But I wouldn't be changing everything around just to avoid doing Adelaide to Melbourne. You will still enjoy it and plenty of people do it that way. It is just a tad easier doing it the other way.
