Good ON Ya!

I heard this wonderful saying over and over on our recent visit to Oz. It seems to have many different meanings though. All you Aussies our there - please share YOUR interpretation of "Good ON Ya!"

John,

I'm an Aussie and I love this saying. And of course we shorten everything, so it then shortens down to "onya" which stands for "good on you".

It can be meant one of two ways:

The positive way is when you are giving someone encouragement for something terrific they've done.

The much more fun, though negative, way is saying it very sarcastically, as in when some idiot cuts into your lane in traffic, and in a "duh-y" voice you say to that person "Good ON-ya, stupid".

Daisy - 99% of the time I heard it in the positive way. However, we were riding in a cab in Brisbane and someone cut into the lane in front of us (just like your description.) The cabbie pounded on his horn and yelled
"G'Donyabludger!" Just like that - all one word! It was scary and funny at the same time. I couldn't figure out why he would wish good onto the person that almost made him wreck his cab! After he calmed down, he explained it to me (as well as telling me how NOT to be a bludger when shouting at the pub!)

I think the saying is fantastic. I posted this on the board because everyone seems to have a slightly different usage of it and I was curious to see how people are using it.

John in Miami

I remember having this discussion a few years back with a Canadian. Good on ya is positive though it can of course be said in a sarcastic tone as the taxi driver did.
