Family Vacation help needed
My husband, son (age 12), and I think we have settled on Australia and possibly Fiji for a 3 week trip in June/July 2008. This is for our 25th anniversary. We have travelled fairly extensively and I have been to Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns/Green Island, Uluru, Perth, Kakadu/Darwin before. My husband has been from Sydney to Cairns.
We are looking for something different, possibly something adventurous. Our son has never been to Australia but loves animals, swimming, has tried surfing (loved it) and so we thought this to be a great destination. No real budget in mind, as this is a special event.
Any thoughts?
Thanks, in advance....

You have already been to some of the best spots. In June/July it will be winter and possibly school holidays. I would go to the Gold Coast and hire a car. The is the Currumbin Bird Sanctuary where you can see lots of native animals and birds and many are roaming free. Don't miss the bird feeding where the loriceets climb over people looking for food.It might be a little cold for swimming but the beaches are beautiful. Both Brisbane and Sydney have bridge climbs for a bit of adventure. The hinterland area behind the coast is also lovely and easily done in day trips. You can hike as much or as little as you like in Springbrook National park,Lamington national park and you could even stay at O'Reillys Guesthouse. Anywhere you choose to go in the south of Aust will be cold but if that doesn't bother you that there is lots to do in Tasmania. Very generally, the weather is less likely to be sunny or warm the further south you go.

Hi JuicyLucy
What a wonderful way to celebrate your anniversary!
Can I put in a suggestion for my local area of Port Stephens? If your son enjoys watersports, he has a great variety to choose from here. We are only two and a half hours road travel from Sydney (or a short airline flight), and have plenty to offer travellers.
Take a look at www.portstephens.org.au to see the attractions, accommodation etc.
Happy travels, Di

My wife and I were looking to do something different on a trip to Australia ten years ago. We decided to do a 10 day 4WD outback safari from Darwin across the remote Kimberley region to Broome. We still look back at it being one of the best, if not the best, vacation we ever had. The group and guide we had were a lot of fun and the scenery was spectacular. We had many of the gorges, swimming holes and waterfalls entirely to ourselves. And camping out, even sleeping out under the stars, was a great was to experience the outback close up.
