Hi sladkaya0021,

Well you will need a current drivers license in the country of your origin. If this license is not in English then an international drivers license is also required. You must have held your license for a minumum of 1 year. You will also need a credit card and that is about it. You can hire a car with child seat fitted, if you intend to do any long distance driving with a baby I think you should be looking at a Ford Falcon sedan. They are all automatics, air conditioned and have cruise control. You can also ask to have sat nav equipped falcons with some of the hire car firms like Hertz.

We use Hertz quite a lot from Sydney airport and have not had any problems, last time we hired a falcon they upgraded us to a Nissan Maxima which was very nice.

Cheers

Sladkay, a better question is WHY rent a car at all in Sydney? Unless you're planning on renting one at the airport and heading off for other areas, you don't really need a car, and in fact, in my opinion it's a liability.

Sydney is a wonderful walking city and has great transportions, via buses, trains and ferries. You won't have the stress of driving in city traffic on the other side of the road, parking, etc. and you'll be able to enjoy the city more!

Hope this is helpful!

Melodie is exactly, one hundred and ten percent correct. Anyway, you'd need to hire a car with a child seat, and I'll bet they'll find a way to make you pay dearly for that extra feature!

You'd be better off buying a cheap stroller up at St Vincent de Paul in Broadway (or the K-Mart shop a block away) and donating it back when you finished.

The car companies on average charge around A$3.00 per day for the child seat, we use this feature all the time and it does not add a lot to the overall car hire charge.

Cheers

I have a question on the same subject. We will be coming from the U.S. Do we need to buy the insurance that the rental agency offers or will our own insurance and use of our credit card be enough? Thanks.

jacylou, you don't have to buy the insurance that the car rental agent offers.
So if accidents do happen, then you'll have to pay whatever amount stated in the contract then later claim back from your travel insurance (If your policy covers for rental car damages).

The excess reduction insurance is usually A$20+/day, and each company have different terms & conditions, so read them carefully.

Jacy,

well, that's half right ...you don't have to BUY the insurance - it's included in the car rental price. You don't have any choice if buying from the US - it's mandatory. Even if you have insurance through your credit card, they will still charge you in cetain countries (Italy, Australia, NZ).
