Driving from Sydney to Melbourne

My mom and I have 4-5 days to get to Melbourne from Sydney. So we are planning to rent a car and drive. What are some must-see cities along teh coastal drive? Which cities should we stay in? Any itinerary suggestions?

travelgirl, there's been quite a few previous threads on this - if you use the search box above you should get some useful suggestions. You could also search on the names of some places along the way that have been mentioned - for example Jervis Bay, Batemans Bay, Narooma, Merimbula, Eden. If you're interested in an inland diversion you could also look for Canberra and Braidwood. Let us know if that doesn't work for you though.

I would also add Bega, Mallacoota, Wilson's Promontory and Phillip Island to the list. Merimbula is a good stopover with plenty of accommodation, Metung, near Lakes Entrance, is right on the water and although a very small town it is delightful stopover, Phillip Island is another stopover and the Penguin Parade is a must see.
I would think 3 to 4 days would be enough unless of course you would like to include Canberra then you would probably need 5 days.

Note - none of these are really cities - just larger or smaller towns. Anywhere along that coast is great.

Look at Huskisson on Jervis Bay - we were there last week. Lunch in the Husky Pub was good - food was OK - but view was marvellous. Out of season, which September is, and mid-week, you should get birds and roos at Greenpatch, in Boodaree National Park, about 30 mins drive.

Just moseying along is a delight - I'm a south coast nut!
