We (2) drove from Sydney to Melbourne via Canberra. Just stayed at a motel -- nothing fancy -- but thoroughly enjoyed Canberra. Easy to get around and very interesting. Later made the trip from Sydney to Melbourne with family (7 of us including 2 yr. old and 8 yr. old) and went by train during the day. It was very enjoyable!!! So enjoyable that we (2) took a train ride in Canada this spring. Good luck!

Why not consider going up the Princess Highway through Gippsland and then up the NSW South coast? It's a much more interesting drive with nice scenery and plenty of interesting places to stop along the way. To do it properly might take a bit longer but it can be done in 2 days. The Hume hwy. is quick but mostly boring.

My family of 3 also took the drive round trip from Melbourne to Sydney. There's isn't much of a place to overnight except Canberra which makes for a good break. Canberra is a small modern capital and you will have no problem finding a hotel with some planning. Your only other place to eat is Albury (4-5 hrs from Melbourne) on the Victoria/NSW border. Fast food joints is all you'll see in that town. Canberra is definetly worth the visit.

Try taking a bit of a detour to Beechworth which is just about 30 Klm out of Albury and Wodonga. This was Ned Kelly country ( he was our most famous bushranger) and it is a pretty little place with a very famous bakery and some nice little places to stay. Canberra too have some nice places to stay - try the babs site, which is the Bed and Breakfast site - www.babs.com.au I think and then click on to Canberra and surrounds. Canberra is interesting and it is Australia's Capital city. <BR>Have a nice holiday.
