Thanks Tim and Liz, so far there's cyclone warning between Lockhart River (Cape York) and Port Douglas, Cairns to Innisfail is on cyclone alert. Ingrid looks like a nasty one, Category 5 at the moment, its moving slowly so won't know anything for a while.

My thoughts are with all of you in FNQ during the next 48 hours.
I have just heard on the news here in Wellington that Cyclone Ingrid is considered to be more destructive than Cyclone Tracy. I do hope not, and that all remain safe.

Pat, it sounds like a case of "batten down the hatches". I hope you've made the necessary arrangements for appropriate sustenance.
It takes more than a cyclone to scare North Queenslanders. It takes a run on the local bottle shop.

My Cairns correpondent reports (at 8:17 am today) "Ingrid now seems more set on a coastal crossing further north, with wet arses for us". Sounds like this could be bad news for Aboriginal settlements north of Cairns.

From www.bom.gov.au:
"Expect clockwise winds 30/40 knots, increasing to 40/50 knots within 50 nm of the centre, and to 110 knots near the centre."
More complications. 1 nm = 6076.1 ft, ~1.15 ordinary miles. So 110 knots should be 126 mph, 203 km/hr.
LoveItaly, it's not 186 mph but it's pretty fast.
The area affected is given as within 90 nm (103 miles, 167 km) of the cyclone's centre.

Oh Neil, 126 mph is devastating to even think about! Thank you for the update. I truly pray that everyone in the area of FNQ will be alright. Batten down the hatches for sure! My best wishes to all in this area.

Thanks for the good wishes everyone - at 2pm Queensland time Ingrid is very slowly tracking towards Cape Melville on Cape York where it should make landfall early tomorrow. It was downgraded from a cat.5 to cat. 4 overnight - wind gusting up to 260kmph. Tourists from Lizard Island and Cape Tribulation have been evacuated, Cooktown looks as if it could really "cop" it, and needless to say all reef trips are cancelled until further notice. There is some concern about tidal surges as the cyclone is coinciding with king tides.
Thanks for your concern Neil, sustenance is well at hand, as usual!

Ingrid passed well north of Cairns and Port Douglas and crossed Cape York with minimal damage to remote areas. Its now heading across Gulf of Carpentaria as a Category 3, on course for the town of Gove, Northern Territory. Heavy rain associated with cyclone at Cairns, PD, Daintree etc with over an inch falling an hour - easing to showers tomorrow. Trips to Daintree and Cape Trib. cancelled today due to flooding.
