Combatting the dreaded DVT on route to/from Australia??
Hi all! I am flying with my mom to Australia next month (yay!) and she is a bit worred about that darn Deep Vein Thrombosis....I'm wondering if you all have any tips to avoid this? I've heard about taking a half an aspirin and frequent walks about the plane. Any more you can share, off-hand? Many thanks, I appreciate your time! Dana

You can buy special socks from the supermarket (well here in Australia anyway) that help with DVT. Walking up and down the cabin is definitely recommended. Most long haul airlines have information in the inflight magazines with tips on DVT so check those out.

You can buy the elasticised "DVT" knee-highs in the US (I bought some in a chemist in Manhattan, but can't remember the brand).
As D/Under says, just do the exercises in the in-flight magazine, take a walk around every now & again; take it easy on the alcohol & drink plenty of water.
I usually take a couple of asprin too - but I've had a DVT (not flight related), so know I'm a bit prone to coagulation.
Other than that - chill out & enjoy the trip.

As well as the good advice above it is worth improving your fitness before flying. Helps to get over jet lag and also enjoy your holiday more as well. Now I must get outin the garden and work on mine

Many pharmacies in the U.S. sell compression stockings for men and women. I have even seen them in different sizes, different strengths (if that is the correct term) and a choice of black or white.
