A lot depends on how much time you have.
We took the TranzAlpine round trip.
Although we enjoyed it and the scenery was great, it seemed to take up too much time for what it was. We the same scenery returning as going.
We were sorry that we hadn't coordiated thinkgs to only go one way or skip it all together and use our limited time on other excursions.

The bulk of the best scenery is in the section from Christchurch to Arthurs Pass. We did the one way to Greymouth and then rented a car to drive to Franz josef, which was just right for our trip.
Friends stayed in christchurch and did the one way only to Arthurs then did a land package with jet boating to get back to christchurch. Either way, round trip is alot of time on a train seeing the same scenes.

We have done Tranzalpine as far as Arthurs Pass. We got off here and did some fabulous walks into the bush and viewed beautiful scenery/waterfalls etc. We then caught the same train returning to ChCh that afternoon. Perfect day out into the Southern Alps - recommended.
