Cheaper eating in Australia

I am disappointed when I see people writing in, having been to Australia, and saying that the price of food here is about the same as in the USA. This is not the case unless of course you are comparing Australian good restaurants with "run of the mill" restaurants in the USA.
I feel that we have let people down in this respect by not giving them good advise and I have been guilty of this myself on occasion.
For those people who are coming to Australia - there are very good meals to be had at all the Returned Services Clubs, Bowls clubs, Football clubs etc throughout the country. You would certainly get a good main course for $10 or less at any of these venues. I was in the US in August and the best I could do was about $20AU per head at places like Denny's.
Where I live - in the hinterland of the Gold Coast we can expect to pay anything upward of $2.75AU for a roast dinner at the services clubs, $5 per person for a great meal of fish and chips, $10AU for a good meal at a pub and so on and so forth.
I think we must let people from overseas know where to get a good meal as its not everyday that one wants a full restaurant meal.
Also what is wrong with the many cafes' that make the best hamburgers in the world which should have put big Mac out of business years ago. Not to mention our wonderful salad bars which are not even available in the USA.
Chop chop folks and lets give them the correct info. before they come.

I really enjoyed the food in Australia and didn`t find it expensive. The only splurge we had was ordering "Bugs" in Cairns. I had no bad meals anywhere.

I seem to be the only one that found the price of food in Australia high. We live in Vancouver Canada and we felt we paid more everywhere we went in Aussieland. Part of the problem could be we are vegetarians and our choice of food was limited. We loved Australia but were surprised by the price in resturants.

I was in Australia last month and have lived in Canada up till then ( now in the UK)
I found the food in Australia of far better quality than in Canada and for half the price! Yes you can get cheap food in Canada and the US but its fried rubbish and what they call a salad would make a lettuce blush!
If you eat only vegetables then you still could have had a very good meal for about $3AU - tell me where you can get that in Canada. But did you ask anyone in Australia first where you could get good wholesome meals Shirl or did you just rock on into a nice restaurant and order? If you were in Sydney then there are many, many Veggie Restaurants you can experience.
What about the wonderful " salad bread rolls" which are about 6inches high for about $3?
Australians are a very helpful bunch and go out of their way to accommodate visitors - all you have to do is ask!
LOVE YA AUSSIES !!!!!!!!!!

I was in Au.in late March/early April. My friend and I found the food to be delightful, and cheap by what we have to pay for a nice meal in Fort Worth. The fruits and veggies were to die for as we say. I would say the prices were about half what we would pay here.
We love the Aussies and everything about Au.
